Tips for Staying Fit While Traveling for Work
Traveling can be an amazing experience, but it can also be a recipe for disaster when it comes to staying fit. Here are five tips to help you stay on track while on the road:
Making time for exercise
It can be tough to find time to work out when you’re calling on customers and working accounts on the road. However, there’s always a way to get in a few minutes for exercise. And, believe it not, getting 20-30 minutes of real exercise every day will have a great affect on your success.
- You’ll be much more energized and focused throughout the day, and customers will notice.
- Staying fit means watching your weight, which can be difficult when traveling (we’ll get to that later in this post), but exercise on the road will definitely help you look and feel your best.
- Try to fit in a 30-minute walk or run each day, and explore your surroundings by bike or on foot whenever possible.
- Exercising every day is proven to boost your mood. Improving your mood means improving your attitude, and that means remaining positive all day, no matter what happens while at work.
- Adding physical activity to your schedule each day will promote a good nights sleep, even while staying in hotels and motels.
Scheduling Exercise Time On the Road
Your body will appreciate it if you maintain some consistency in your schedule. According to studies, our bodies adore regularity and enjoy nothing more than getting up at the same time every day. If you enjoy working out in the mornings or visiting your home gym early, keep up this routine when traveling for business. Try to include this in your schedule if you like to exercise after work to relieve tension.
One reason to schedule your exercise time for morinings is that it’s a safer option. Your best laid plans can quickly be derailed by delays, late meetings, and unexpected happy hour or dinner invites. Set an alarm, do it first thing, and you’ll be less likely to need to intervene.
How Can I Get Exercise While Traveling for Work?
Whether you are traveling for work or pleasure, it can be difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle on the road and stay fit. However, there are a few simple ways to make sure you get some exercise even when you’re away from home.
-Making Use of the Motel or Hotel Gym or Swimming Pool
Don’t neglect the gym or swimming pool in your motel or hotel. Many places to stay have gyms and/or swimming pools available to you.
Even though 45 minutes of exercise is my preferred technique, if you can get in 20 minutes of intense swimming, riding an exercise bike, or lifting weights, it can change everything about how you handle work.
-Walking While Traveling
I don’t know if this will work for you or not? I can appreciate the safety concerns when it comes to walking in unfamiliar places. However, if you can find a park nearby, or you feel safe walking near your motel or hotel, walking is a great way to get in a few minutes of exercise while working.
Walking for staying fit has a lot of benefits, and the most natural form of exericise. When it comes to fitness while you’re working, going for a fast paced walk before and after work will clear your head, increase your focus, and help you de-stress. So, don’t leave home without your walking shoes.
-Taking Your Favorite Fitness Equipment to Work
Strength training on the road or at home, doesn’t always require a gym or a set of barbells. If you travel for work in an automobile, taking a couple of dumbbells along can give you quite a workout right in your motel room.
Personally, I prefer my favorite resistance band set.Not only can you stay fit, but you can easily build muscle mass with resistance bands. They’re compact and take up very little room when traveling. Resistance bands can easily be hooked to door knobs, or various other methods.
-Bodyweight Exercises While Traveling for Work
There’s a pletora of different exercises that require nothing more than your own body weight. Developing your own routine of bodyweight exercises you can do where you’re staying will definitely affect your fitness in all the right ways.
Other than the standard exercises you can do with your own body weight such as push ups, crunches, sit ups, and spider crawls, you could easily take along the FitBeast Pull Up Bar for Doorways. This excellent piece of portable workout equipment is for far more than doing pull ups.
Eating Healthy While Traveling for Work
One of the challenges of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is eating healthy when traveling for work. When you’re on the road, it can be difficult to find healthy food options, and even harder to stick to your usual routine.
There are a few things you can do to make sure you eat healthy while traveling:
- Pack your own meals and snacks whenever possible. This will help you avoid unhealthy convenience foods. This could include taking things like fruits and nuts, hard boiled eggs, whole grain sandwiches, or yogurt. You can pack them in a cooler with ice, or take along a cooler that plugs into an electrical outlet in your car.
- Make every effort to eat regular meals, even if you’re on the go. Skipping meals can make it harder to resist unhealthy temptation.
- Eat healthy meals. It’s easy to indulge when traveling, but it’s important to eat nutritious meals as well. Look for opportunities to eat locally-sourced fruits and vegetables, and make an effort to limit processed foods and sugary snacks.
- Seek out restaurants that offer healthy choices and try to bypass the fast food places like McDonalds. Do not be swayed by their ads proclaiming that they serve healthy food choices, they don’t.
- Always keep some healthy snacks with you in case you get hungry between meals.
Getting Enough Sleep While Traveling
A good night’s sleep is essential for good health whether you’re at home or traveling for work. During sleep, our bodies heal and repair themselves. Getting enough sleep helps to boost our immune system, helps us to de-stress, focus better, and can even help to improve our memory. Getting enough sleep can help to reduce stress from work and promote overall well-being.
But the truth is, it can be difficult to get enough sleep when you’re living on the road. But, sleep might be even more important while you’re away from home and working.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults should be getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. But in reality, most of us only get an average of 6.8 hours of sleep per night. There are many reasons why we might not be getting enough sleep, including stress, work demands, and getting into bad habits when away from home.
Sticking to a Routine
Most people have some sort of daily routine they stick to under “normal circumstances”. To stay fit when you’re job requires you to travel routines are just as important, even though they may be harder to start.
There’s no doubt that travel can be disruptive to your daily routine. But, it is important to try to build routines as best you can while living on the road. Try to plan for your exercise, meals, and sleep to be at the same time each day.
With building your traveling life around regular routines, you’ll be able to truly relax when it’s time to shut the job down. By planning ahead and being mindful of your needs, you can find a happy middle ground between work and stability when traveling.
